AECL’s Underground Research Laboratory (URL), located a short distance from Whiteshell, is also undergoing decommissioning. Established in 1982, its purpose was to study the feasibility of safe disposal of nuclear fuel waste in a stable, low-permeability rock mass. The underground portion of the URL was closed and sealed in 2010. AECL continues to conduct R&D work at Whiteshell as well as ensure sustainable groundwater management at the site. "
