HISTORY OF TATTOOING IN THE ARCTIC by Lars Krutak

HISTORY OF TATTOOING IN THE ARCTIC by Lars Krutak: "Standing sentinel in the frozen waters of Bering Sea, St. Lawrence Island fosters a complex of remarkable tattooing traditions spanning 2000 years. Ancient maritime peoples from Asia first colonized this windswept outpost lured by vast herds of ivory-bearing walrus and other sea-mammals. Bringing with them new advances in hunting technology and material culture, the Old Bering Sea/Okvik and Punuk peoples quickly adapted to their insular environment. "

Plan to cull 70,000 grey seals gets Senate panel's approval - Politics - CBC News

Plan to cull 70,000 grey seals gets Senate panel's approval - Politics - CBC News: "There were an estimated 104,000 of the animals living in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence as of 2010, the Senate committee said in a news release.

The report also recommends setting up a bounty system to compensate hunters, but it didn't say how much the bounty should be. There is no market for grey seal pelts.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) blames the seals for preventing cod stocks from recovering in the Gulf.

Acting fisheries minister Gail Shea is under pressure from the fishing industry to do something about the stalled cod recovery in the Gulf, where there's indirect scientific evidence suggesting hungry grey seals are to blame.

Polar Bear Legend of the Great Canadian North - Canadian Wildlife Education Series

Polar Bear Legend of the Great Canadian North - Canadian Wildlife Education Series: "Polar bears naturally balance nature by preventing seal over populations and by leaving food scraps for arctic fox, raven and other bears. Ringed seal is their favorite food though they will hunt other types of seals and occasionally whales and walrus. Their tremendous sense of smell permits them to locate a seals breathing hole up to 1 mile away. Polar Bears walk up to4 miles per hour, while females with cubs slow to less than 2 miles. They use more than twice the amount of energy when walking than other mammals and 13 times more energy than resting bears. They can run up to 25 miles per hour over short distances. Harsh Arctic environments lead to food scarcity. To aid in its survival they slow their metabolism down after 10 days without food. This allows the bear to conserve energy until food is available. Hungry bears have been known to swim up to 6 miles per hour for up to 56 miles, though this quickly depletes their energy. When food is abundant its territory is small.

The University of Maine - Cooperative Extension: Cranberries - Highbush Cranberry (not a true cranberry): "The highbush cranberry is actually not a cranberry at all, though its fruit, or “drupes” as they are known taxonomically, strongly resemble cranberries in both appearance and taste. They also mature in the fall, as cranberries do. The two plants are quite different, however. Both are native to North America, but the highbush cranberry is a Viburnum, a member of the Caprifoliaceae, or Honeysuckle family, in contrast to the ‘true,’ or ‘lowbush’ cranberry, which is a Vaccinium, a member of the Ericaceae—Heather or Heath—family. Northland Fishing Tackle: Basic Knowledge

Northland Fishing Tackle: Basic Knowledge: "LAKE TYPES Our game fish swim in many different lake types in the Northland. Certain species thrive in rivers, lakes and reservoirs because special conditions are present for their existence. Rivers are the most prolific, and produce the widest variety of gamefish species. The large shallow sand bottom lakes and bays are normally best suited for walleye & perch, while the shallow weedy lakes and bays are better suited for Largemouth Bass, Panfish and Northern Pike. In the larger Canadian glacier lakes that are predominately deep and rocky . . . Crappie, Walleye, Lake Trout, Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike and Muskie all have certain niches and areas that they dominate and thrive in!"

Sunday Morning Serenade - Saskatchewan - YouTube:
Video uploaded from my mobile iPhone at 8AM Sunday morning, September-09-2012.
Air-impact torque wrenches are being used to assemble steel grain bins on a commercial lot directly opposite our residence. This work generally continues daily throughout summer (including Sundays and legal holidays), from 7:30AM onwards.
A "decibel" is the unit to measure the loudness of sound.
When using an air-impact torque wrench, ear protection is necessary because the decibel level of the tool is over 100 decibels (104 -107 dB) -- a dangerous noise level.
Any noise level above 85 decibels (dB) may be hazardous to your hearing, even if it only lasts for a short while.

Firearms, ammo, weapons, gear reviews, 2nd Amendment issues, etc...: Saiga AK Conversion: "Saiga AK Conversion
The Saiga is made by Izhmash, the original AK-47 manufacturer in Russia, who still produces the real deal for the Russian military. They produce them in a variety of different calibers including (but not limited to) 5.56, 7.62x39, .308, and even shotgun calibers such as 12ga and 20ga (among others).

They are quality AK's, some of the best on the market in my opinion, and very hard to beat at the prices they can be had at.

In order to qualify for importation, the Saiga AK is made in a "sporting" configuration without the signature pistol grip and to accept only 10 round magazines specifically designed for the Saiga. They even mark the 5.56 rifles in .223 to help pass them off as "sporting rifles" (some would say)."

And airships of the past were no different. In the first few decades of the 20th century people scrambled to figure out how they might cash in on these exciting new inventions, which were slowly beginning to prove themselves technologically reliable.

But not everyone thought that commercial flight was a good investment. The January 2, 1909, issue of Literary Digest re-published portions of a December 10, 1908 editorial in Engineering News under the headline, “A Warning to Air-Ship Investors.”"

Trout Basics

Trout Basics: "Trout are cold-blooded beings and unlike humans, their body temperature varies and is directly related to the surrounding environment. Because of this their level of activity changes as the water temperature changes. If the water temperature fluctuates to much, they will decrease their level of activity accordingly to conserve energy. There seems to be a temperature range of about 20 to 25 degrees F in which most trout can maintain the status quo. Most studies have shown that trout will maintain a normal regimen in temperatures ranging from around 40 to 65 degrees give or take a few degrees on the high and/or low sides. In this ideal range of temperatures is when you will find the trout actively feeding. When the water temperature fluctuates higher or lower than these ranges, they usually become sluggish or dormant and can even die if temperatures fluctuate too much outside of their ideal range."

He's been restrained since the '90s. He hasn't left here at all since 1990. A villager points to an elderly man chained up next to his own excrement. Such shocking sights are not unique in Bali. Helplessness and ignorance makes parents of mentally ill patients resort to confinement. I love my child. But he's destructive. Komangs father kept him locked in a cage for eight years before he met Dr Suryani. Balis leading psychiatrist, shes campaigned tirelessly to improve the islands mental health but the Health Minister is reluctant to help: We have a limited budget for drugs. Those drugs are expensive. So she pays them out of her own pocket. Freighting

Freighting: "Freighting developed with the establishment of the commercial fishing industry in northern Saskatchewan. A way was needed to transport supplies to the isolated fishing camps, and bring back the fish to the fish company located in Big river. There were no roads going into the northern camps during the early years of commercial fishing. Air transportation was not considered as a method of transporting goods in and out of communities. Freighting goods into the north by canoe along the river systems had been going on since the fur trade. However, commercial fishing occurred during the winter months and waterways were frozen. The alternative used was sleighs drawn by horses over the frozen waterways and along the old Hudson Bay portage routes. "

CBC.ca | The Sunday Edition | RCMP - Organ Donation - Howard Shore

CBC.ca | The Sunday Edition | RCMP - Organ Donation - Howard Shore: "It has not been a good year for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Or for that matter, a good three years or a good five years.

Scandals, low morale, falling public confidence, internal bickering, have all conspired to rock the RCMP to its foundations.

All of which has been dumped in the lap of the force's new top cop.

Bob Paulson is promising leadership and accountability. He is known within the force as a "cop's cop," but he wants to be remembered as a "citizen's cop."

RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson joined Michael from Ottawa."

Zenith Watches Rebalanced

Zenith Watches Rebalanced: "1865 and 1,546.

Those are, respectively, the founding year of Swiss watchmaker Zenith and the number of first-place chronometer competitions they've won. Almost unknown in the USA due to sharing a name with a consumer electronics company, Zenith is one of the small number of companies to have their own movements, or manufacture. In particular, their chronograph series 'El Primero' powered the Rolex Daytona from 1988 until 2000, as well as Tag Heuer Calibre 36, Panerai OP IV, Ulysse Nardin and others. They also have the 'Elite' movement, which is an in-house chronometer-grade timekeeper with date complication. Price for the pieces isn't bad actually."

From Nunavut to Lourdes : Pharyngula

From Nunavut to Lourdes : Pharyngula: "Eric Dejaeger is a Catholic priest and pedophile who benefited greatly from church policy: when it was learned that he was a child-raping monster, the Catholic Church did the upright, moral thing and kept him on as a priest, but simply shipped him off to the Canadian north where he'd only be raping the Inuit. When the law caught up with him even in that remote place, he fled…and guess where he found shelter and employment? Back in the arms of Mother Church, of course."

Memories of Fox Main

Memories of Fox Main: "HALL BEACH AND ROWLEY ISLAND - FOX MAIN AND FOX 1
Rowley Island was located about 50 miles slightly N of E of Hall Beach. It was the location of the Aux Site, FOX 1. This was the only location (I think) on the DEWline where two Aux, or an Aux and a Main site, did not have an I-site in between - there was only water in between. So the geography of the location demanded a slightly different configuration of equipment than usual. As I mentioned earlier, the I-sites usually housed the Doppler transmitters and the adjacent M or A-sites would house the corresponding receivers for each link. The solution arrived at in this instance was to keep the configuration at the A-site standard, ie, two receivers, and Fox Main would substitute for the missing I-site and house the transmitter. Hence the reason for this kit in the TTY repair room."
