Diamond Jenness - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: "His detailed studies of the Copper Inuit around Coronation Gulf, and of other Arctic native people, helped establish him. Although most of his time thereafter was devoted to Indian studies (and administrative duties), he soon identified two very important prehistoric Eskimo cultures: the Dorset in Canada (in 1925)[2] and the Old Bering Sea culture in Alaska (in 1926)[3], for which he later was named 'Father of Eskimo Archaeology.'["

Dorset culture - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: "Inuit legends recount their driving away the people they called Tuniit (singular Tuniq) or Sivullirmiut (First Inhabitants). According to legend, the First Inhabitants were 'giants', people who were taller and stronger than the Inuit, but who were easily scared off.[1] Scholars believe that the Dorset and the later Thule people were the peoples encountered by the Norse who visited the area. The Norse called these native peoples skræling."

Poem: The Cremation of Sam McGee (an abnormal way of getting warm in the freezing conditions of a Canadian winter as expressed by Robert Service):
"There are strange things done in the midnight sun
By the men who moil for gold;
The Arctic trails have their secret tales
That would make your blood run cold;
The Northern Lights have seen queer sights,
But the queerest they ever did see
Was that night on the marge of Lake Lebarge
I cremated Sam McGee."

Tasiujaq - About Us

Tasiujaq - About Us: "Tasiujaq was built on the shores of Leaf Lake at the head of Deep Harbour on the Finger River. It lies a few kilometres north of the tree line. Here, the shrub tundra finally gives way to the arctic tundra. Tasiujaq, which means 'resembling a lake,' actually refers to the whole of Leaf Basin: Leaf Lake, Leaf Passage and Leaf Bay. Leaf Basin is renowned for its high tides which regularly exceed 15 m."

DEJAEGER, ERIC JOSE: "Categories of Offences: CRIMES AGAINST CHILDREN
Arrest Warrant Issued by: IGLOOLIK / Canada"

RELIGION AND CHILD ABUSE NEWS: Canadian priest convicted of pedophilia, wanted by Interpol for 15 years, surrenders in Belgium but authorities let him go

RELIGION AND CHILD ABUSE NEWS: Canadian priest convicted of pedophilia, wanted by Interpol for 15 years, surrenders in Belgium but authorities let him go: "he Belgian-born priest, who became a Canadian citizen in 1977, is wanted for three counts of indecent assault on a male and three counts of buggery for incidents involving minors and alleged to have occurred between 1978 and 1982 in Igloolik. These charges were laid after he completed a five-year sentence in April of 1995 (a penitentiary stint, a halfway house then probation) for abusing children in Baker Lake, then part of the Northwest Territories, now part of Nunavut. Dejaeger left Canada before his first court date in June of 1995 and a bench warrant was issued for his arrest.

Six years later, the Interpol red alert was circulated. Nine years after that, in May of this year, Belgian journalist Douglas De Coninck published an article detailing Dejaeger’s life on the lam. The priest worked with pilgrims in Lourdes and participated in masses. A member of the Oblate Order of Mary Immaculate, he was living at the order’s villa in Blanden. Several months after the article appeared, Dejaeger voluntarily turned himself in at the Leuven police station."

NunatsiaqOnline 2011-01-19: NEWS: Oblate priest returns to Nunavut to face sex charges

NunatsiaqOnline 2011-01-19: NEWS: Oblate priest returns to Nunavut to face sex charges: "Dejaeger seems to have escaped justice all these years because Belgium wasn’t aware he’d become a Canadian citizen in 1977, even though it’s clearly stated in the RCMP file, said RCMP Supt. Howard Eaton in a phone call from Iqaluit.

After having lived in Canada’s Arctic since the 1970s, Dejaeger was sentenced in 1990 to five years for nine counts of sexually abusing children in Baker Lake.

In 1995, after Dejaeger served his term, more complainants came forward from Igloolik. Dejaeger fled Canada for Belgium and failed to show up for court appearance scheduled for June 1995.

Interpol placed Dejaeger on its wanted list on May 3, 2001."

Fifteen-year search for pedophile Canadian priest ends — with him going free - thestar.com: "Belgian federal authorities said they could not begin extradition proceedings against Dejaeger — who in 1990 pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting eight children in the Northwest Territories, and who was later charged with assaults in Igloolik, Nunavut — because Canada’s Justice Department hadn’t filed a formal extradition request.

“Why? Why? Why? I just keep asking ‘Why?’” said Igloolik Mayor Lucassie Ivalu. He and others in the remote village of about 1,700 in the Northwest Passage, were unaware Dejaeger was living and working freely in Europe and that the outstanding charges had not been tried.

“We didn’t even know he was hiding,” Ivalu said. “We thought the authorities had already dealt with him because it was so many years ago that we heard he’d been (accused of) abusing (Igloolik) boys . . . When I heard he’d turned himself in, I was really shocked and angry.”"

Angel Falls - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: "Returning on 9 October 1937, Angel tried to land his Metal Aircraft Corporation Flamingo monoplane El Río Caroní; atop Auyan-tepui, but the plane was damaged when the wheels sank into the marshy ground, and he and his three companions, including his wife Marie, were forced to descend the tepui on foot. It took them 11 days to make their way back to civilization, but news of their adventure spread, and the waterfall was named Angel Falls in his honor.

Angel's plane remained on top of the tepuy for 33 years before being lifted out by helicopter. It was restored at the Aviation Museum in Maracay and now sits outdoors on the front of the airport at Ciudad Bolívar."

Virtual Saskatchewan - Antique Clocks

Virtual Saskatchewan - Antique Clocks: "Every clock Wilkie buys must be complete in every aspect. He reconditions the movement of each timepiece he purchases, whether or not it's operating well. When the woodwork requires reconditioning, the clock is sent to a respected Saskatoon furniture maker.

Among his favorite pendulum clocks for buying, selling and trading are ones made by the Arthur Pequegnat Clock Company, of Kitchener, ON., and American pendulum clocks made by the Seth Thomas company of Plymouth Hollow, CT. Pequegnat was a Swiss clockmaker who brought his trade to Canada in 1874 and swiftly built a reputation as a maker of quality timepieces. The Seth Thomas company, established in 1813, is also well represented at Wilkie's. Both companies, not surprisingly, made jeweler's regulators."

Qikiqtarjuaq, Nunavut

Qikiqtarjuaq, Nunavut: "Qikiqtarjuaq, formerly known as Broughton Island, is located just four kilometres off of the east coast of Baffin Island in Davis Strait. It is 100km north of the Arctic Circle and 483 km north of Iqaluit, the territory's capital. Although the island is referred to as the island, as its Inuktitut name suggests, the island is in fact only 12km wide and 16km long. The community has a population of approximately 520 people and 95% of these people are Inuit."

Who's Going to Eat Me?

Who's Going to Eat Me?: "Originally written in Inuktitut as part of the Baffin Divisional Board of Education's efforts to develop a library of Inuktitut literature, Who's Going to Eat Me has been translated for distribution in both the north and south of Canada.

Author Tommy Enuaraq and illustrator Germaine Arnaktauyok have produced a children's book that, while northern in approach and message, appeals to southern Canadians as well. English language adaptor Kate McDermott is also deserving of praise, as she has helped produce a book that maintains an Inuit flavour.

By publishing school texts in native languages, Nortext is filling a vital niche in our education system. It is good to see that Canadian children's literature is flourishing, especially in native languages.

Highly recommended.

SGWU (13)

SGWU (13): "In 1851, the first YMCA in North America was established on De Maisonneuve Boulevard in Downtown Montreal, in a district now known as Quartier Concordia. From its early years, the YMCA offered evening classes to allow working people in the English-speaking community to pursue their education while working during the day. Concordia has continued this tradition by offering many night classes during the traditional fall and winter semesters, as well as the summer sessions. In 1926, the education program was re-organized as Sir George Williams College, named after George Williams, founder of the YMCA. In 1934, Sir George Williams College offered the first undergraduate credit course in adult education in Canada.

Cruise ship pollution - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cruise ship pollution - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: "The cruise line industry dumps 255,000 gallons of greywater and 30,000 gallons of blackwater into the sea every day. Blackwater is sewage, wastewater from toilets and medical facilities, which can contain harmful bacteria, pathogens, viruses, intestinal parasites, and harmful nutrients. Discharges of untreated or inadequately treated sewage can cause bacterial and viral contamination of fisheries and shellfish beds, producing risks to public health. Nutrients in sewage, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, promote excessive algal blooms, which consumes oxygen in the water and can lead to fish kills and destruction of other aquatic life. A large cruise ship (3,000 passengers and crew) generates an estimated 55,000 to 110,000 liters per day of blackwater waste"
